The roof gets assessed before anything else
Age, granule loss, soft decking, lifted or brittle shingles, where the growth is concentrated. Some roofs should not be cleaned, and the honest answer is worth more to you than the job is to us.
Everything below the roofline gets protected
Landscaping, walkways and siding are saturated with clean water first and rinsed again afterwards. Run-off goes somewhere, so we decide where before it starts moving.
Low-pressure application
The solution is applied at low pressure and does the work chemically. This is the method the shingle manufacturers themselves point to. Pressure washing a shingle roof blasts off the granules that protect it, and the damage does not show up until later.
Dwell, then rinse
It needs time on the surface to kill the growth at the root. Rushing this is what produces a roof that looks clean for four months and then goes straight back to streaked.
The rest happens on its own
Heavy moss and lichen do not always release the same day. Dead growth loosens and washes off with the next several rains. A roof that still looks patchy on day one is normal and usually not a reason to call us back.

Those black streaks have a name.
The dark streaks running down roofs all over Kenosha and Lake County are a cyanobacteria called gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles, it spreads by air, and it thrives in exactly the humid summers this region gets off the lake. That is why it never seems to be one house on a street — it is the whole street, working its way from roof to roof over a few seasons.
It almost always starts on the north-facing slope. That side holds moisture longest, so it colonizes first and stays worst. If your neighbor is streaked and you are not yet, you are on the clock rather than in the clear.
Moss is the more serious version and it shows up on shaded roofs under mature trees, which describes a lot of the older neighborhoods in Kenosha and along the lakefront. Moss holds water directly against the shingle and lifts the edges as it grows. That one is worth dealing with sooner rather than at your convenience.

Will it all look clean the same day?

Do you walk on the roof?

What about my gutters and landscaping?
Everything in the run-off path is saturated with clean water before we start and rinsed again after. The gutter faces get cleaned as part of the job.
Is there any roof you would turn down?
Yes. A roof at the end of its life, with significant granule loss or soft decking, should not be cleaned — it should be quoted by a roofer. We will say so and we will not take your money for it.
Does a clean roof actually matter, or is it cosmetic?
Both. It is the largest single surface on the house so it dominates how the property reads from the street. But moss and lichen also hold moisture against the shingle and work under the edges, and that is not cosmetic.
